The Pope Visits Cuba

BY MONICA CAMPBELL

Pope Benedict XVI touched down in Cuba after a visit to Mexico. The last papal visit was 14 years ago, when Pope John Paul II met with then-president Fidel Castro. Since then, Cuba has changed, at least in terms of religious freedoms.
Politically though, not so much.

In fact, there’s a grand debate going on now in Cuba over just what the Pope’s visit might accomplish, politically and spiritually. Yanis Leydi, a young mom who lives in downtown Havana, said there’s no question it will be a huge boost to the nation, regardless of one’s faith.
“This trip to Cuba helps to unite us, Cubans, more. There are those who are religious and those who aren’t, and the hope is that he’ll bring people together, to care for one another, independent of politics or religion,” Leydi said.
So much has changed with both politics AND religion since the first papal visit to Cuba 14 years ago OF Pope John Paul II. as a result of that trip, then president Fidel Castro lifted religious restrictions that had been in place since the 1959 revolution. Batista said she’s excited to take her young son to see the Pope’s Mass this Wednesday and feel free to do so:

“He’s the Pope! He represents—Wow!—like God on earth,” she said.
On Sunday at the Santa Rita church in Havana’s Miramar neighborhood, Father José Pérez Riera spoke about the Pope’s visit:
Pérez Riera also stayed away from politics. He stressed that the overall meaning of the Pope’s visit is to present Christ to the world.
After the mass though, one group of women—activists known as the Ladies in White—took a far more aggressive tone, chanting “liberty, liberty” in the streets.
The women, relatives of political prisoners, held their now customary protest march, from the Santa Rita church down a large Havana street. They are unique in Cuba for regularly and openly criticizing the Communist regime for abusing human rights.
Under the shade of a large ceiba tree, protest leader Bertha Soler spoke to foreign reporters and called for the release of jailed political dissidents in Cuba. The press was also anxious to see whether—as usual—pro-government crowds would turn up and harass the women.
In eastern Cuba, the activists claimed that 18 of their members were recently detained. But in Havana the march went peacefully.
In one of Havana’s poorer neighborhoods, people were far more muted about the Pope’s visit – though not entirely a-political. Roberto, who only gave his first name, is an auto mechanic, thin and underemployed. He picked up some extra work on Sunday, and said he’d spend his pay on milk for his two children.
Regarding the Pope’s visit, he said, “It doesn’t matter to me whether he comes or not because for us – for the poor people here – we won’t receive anything from the Pope.”
He said that the Pope’s visit will do more to benefit the Cuban government, to let the world know that it tolerates religious freedom and the Church’s critical view. And while Roberto was more open than he might have been in the past. He cut the interview off, saying “it’s not good to talk about how we live here.”
Even before touching down on Cuban soil, Pope Benedict made headlines stating that Marxism, “no longer corresponds to reality.” In response, President Raul Castro’s foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez offered the brief response that Cuba would, “listen respectfully to the pontiff.” Whether the Pope will repeat his words directly to Castro this week is unknown.

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court plaza has become the public square as justices weigh in on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care law.
Tuesday, demonstrators both for and against the legislation continued to gather outside the court, this time with many of them focusing on the abortion issue.
Pro-lifers are worried the law will force them to finance abortion, birth control, and controversial emergency contraception.
"We know this violates our human rights, our right to practice our freedom, our freedom of faith, and it would violate the rights of countless more unborn children," said Lila Rose, president of the student-led pro-life group Live Action.
Click play to watch Jennifer Wishon's report from the Supreme Court followed by comments from Elizabeth Milito, senior executive counsel at the National Federation of Independent Business.
Protestors are furious over a requirement that most health insurance plans pay a fee for covered abortions.
"How is that right that they're forcing me to pay for something that I don't believe in?" asked Peter Carroll, a resident of Middlesex, N.J.
"How can we stop that? My money is going to go to kill a baby!" Eva Mazzella, another New Jersey resident, added.
"I have an adopted grandson," she continued. "And God bless the mom that did not abort that child."
But pro-abortion activists are just as passionate.
"You should have that availability without having to jump through any hoops or tell anybody about it," Alexandria, Va., resident Arielle Karp said.
And defenders of the law say it's important for government to protect people and not leave their lives in the hands of health insurance companies.
"We used to have great insurance, but my husband was laid off," cancer survivor Spike Dolomite Ward said. "He had to choose between health insurance and the mortgage."
On Tuesday, the high court concentrated on the core of the law's financing: the "individual mandate" that would force all Americans to buy health insurance.
Senators both for and against the measure listened to Tuesday's arguments before the Supreme Court and came out with completely opposite reactions.
"I am convinced after listening to the two hours this morning that this court can go no other way but to uphold the individual mandate," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said.
"Obamacare has been a disaster for America and Americans financially," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., countered.
"And there's no doubt that our country has a health insurance crisis that has to be confronted, but this is the wrong way to confront it," he said.
Twenty-six states are suing over the health care law, and the attorney general from each state is in Washington to join the battle.

Philippines Pastors Face Death for Ministry to Muslims

MINDANAO, Philippines - The Philippines is a mostly Christian nation, but in the south, Muslim fundamentalists are trying to build an Islamic state. Christians there face persecution and even death.
The island of Mindanao on the southernmost part of the Philippines is predominantly Muslim. The area's most remote parts are a haven to terrorist groups linked to al Qaeda that carry out attacks and kidnappings in the region. Because of this, persecution against Christians is strong. This year, at least four house churches closed down after their pastors and lay leaders were killed by Muslim extremists.
Pastor Mario Acidre was one them. His wife, Mayang, is distraught over her husband's murder, which took place right in their home. "My husband staggered into our bedroom and I was shocked because he was full of blood," she recalled. "I brought him to the hospital right away. He was operated on for eight bullet wounds, but did not survive."

Pastor Acidre was a former Muslim who converted to Christianity. He boldly shared the gospel to his Muslim relatives and neighbors. Despite threats to his life, he was not afraid to hold Bible studies in his home, which he eventually converted into a house church.
Witnesses say that just a few hours before he was killed, Acidre agitated some Muslim vendors when he told them he did not believe in the amulets they were trying to sell him.
Pastor Edilberto Beira is the coordinator of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches of the Philippines in the Muslim region. LINK "I admire Pastor Mario's commitment to the Lord. He tried to share the gospel to the Muslim vendors," he said. But Beira added that, "This incident triggered threats to other Muslims who converted to Christianity, and that is why the house churches closed down." Still, that didn't stop Mayang and other believers from going to church. They now worship at the only surviving Christian church in the city. "My neighbors warned me that I should not go out, but I am not afraid because I know Issa, Jesus, is powerful, and He will not forsake me," Mayang said.
"When my husband was still alive, he always told me that we should always be ready to face death for the work of the Lord," she continued. Pastor Beira said his heart is grieved to see pastors come and go in this critical area.
That's why he remains, serving faithfully for more than 30 years despite several threats to his life. Even though church attendance has decreased by 70 percent, he still believes that the Church will still prevail even if the churches are driven underground.
"What we can only do is to make these people grow in the Lord. We have our prayer and fasting, Bible studies, training," Beira said. "If ever we are out, we are still confident that the work of the Lord will go on," he added. "Because that's the promise of the Lord. He said, 'I will build my church. And the gates of hell will not prevail against it.' It includes the ministry among the Muslims."

WAITING ON GOD

WAITING ON GOD

CYCLES OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

The natural life is full of natural cycles. There is a cycle of sleeping and waking, childhood, teens and adulthood, etc. The spiritual world has many cycles. Even Satan attacks in cycles. Paul speaks about being able to stand on the evil day (Ephesians 6:13). Satan cannot attack us unceasingly. He plans his attacks in cycles. When his temptation of Jesus failed, he left seeking an opportune time to try again (Luke 4:13).

TYPES OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE CYCLES
Isaiah 40:31; Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.There are about four spiritual life cycles;
1.   Wait
2.   Flying
3.   Run
4.   Walk
These cycles are frequently repeated in our spiritual lives. There are times when we need to wait on God to receive fresh direction and vision. From those times we come forth with God’s vision for our lives. As we implement it, we need to learn how to run and also how to walk with the vision.

The Art of Waiting on God
There are five main Hebrew words that have been translated as ‘wait’ in
our Bibles. They each carry a different meaning. They are as follows:
1. Chakah - to wait earnestly (Isaiah 64:4; Habakkuk 2:3).
                - to wait intensely serious for receive something
                - to a greater extent or more intensely than before
                - sincerely and serious in intention to receive something
2. Dumiyyah - to wait in silence (Psalms 62:1; 65:1).
3. Daman - to stand still (Psalms 62:5).
4. Tsaba - to serve (Num. 8:24, 25).
5. Qavah - to wait with hope, to be bound (Psalms 25:3; 37:9; 69:6;        Lamentations 3:25; Isaiah 40:31; 49:23).
The word ‘wait’ in Isayah 40:31: The root meaning of the word qavah is ‘to be gathered together’ or ‘to be bound.’ The word ‘qavah’ has been translated as ‘gathered together’
  • it is staying in His presence, seeking to be bound in perfect union together.
  • Times of waiting should be times of intimate bonding to the Lord; where He abides in us and we abide in Him.
  • Our bonding together with the Lord should be as the gathering of the waters into one (Genesis 1:9).

(a)       Why Do we have to wait on God?
(i)                 Being Renewed by God
The word ‘renew’ comes from the Hebrew word ‘chalaph’ which have four special meanings. Each of these meanings explains the process of renewing that takes place as we wait on the Lord. The four possible translations of the word ‘chalaph’ are as follows:

1. Remove or strike through (Isaiah 2:18; Judges 5:26).
2. Change (Genesis 35:2; 41:14; 2 Samuel 12:20; Psalms 102:26).
3. Go forward (1 Samuel 10:3).
4. Grow up (Psalms 90:5, 6).

When we wait on God and become bound in one with Him, four things take place as we are renewed:
  • our sharp edges are removed
  • we receive an exchange of God’s strength for our strength
  • we receive a new vision to go forward
  • and we grow spiritually in our times of intimacy with Him

(ii)              Waiting on God-“He Acts on our Behalf”
Are you waiting for God? He acts on our behalf as we wait for Him. “Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him” (Isaiah 64:4).
(iii)            Waiting on God – “He Strengthens Us”
As you are waiting for God, He strengthens you. “But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings as eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
I once heard an illustration about how God strengthens us during trials. It went like this: “Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm; it simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us, we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The storms do not have to overcome us; we can allow God's power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure, and disappointment into our lives. We can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.”
(iv)             Waiting on God – “He Blesses Us”
When waiting for God, He blesses you. “Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him” (Isayah 30:18)

What does it mean to be blessed by God while we wait on Him? As we wait on God and His timing, He can accomplish so much in our hearts. Often we find new purpose in life, receive answers to prayer, see God work, increase our faith, and most often we see God’s perfect plan fulfilled in our situation. Remember, waiting is not wasted time!

WOKOVU
